Serving Michigan's construction industry since 1969
The A-MAC name has been synonymous with quality and integrity in the African American construction community since 1969, when A-MAC Sales & Builders was founded. Over the past 55 years, A-MAC has played a key role in rebuilding Detroit and shaping the future of Southeastern Michigan. Today, that legacy lives on through A-MAC Construction Services.
A-MAC was the Construction Manager for the $17,000,000 rehabilitation of the two existing buildings for The Wellness Plan as part of their consolidation of operations into Detroit's "New Center" area.
The A-MAC Development Group, in partnership with Touchstone Development, served as the developer and owner of multiple CVS Pharmacy locations throughout the Detroit area. A-MAC Construction Services acted as Construction Manager for these projects, ensuring timely and cost-effective completion while meeting the rigorous standards of the CVS brand and the retail pharmaceutical industry.
Due to the unique nature of the facility, A-MAC self-performed all architectural construction trades in the development of the Saint Aubin Marina. Our scope of work included concrete, masonry, specialty carpentry, metals and metal finishes, window installation, painting, and other architectural specialties.
This 81-unit Low Income Housing Tax Credit financed development, located in Highland Park, Michigan, was funded by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. The project was the first new housing constructed in the city in 20 years. The project was named in honor of Benjamin McLemore and Dr. Benjamin McLemore, the father and brother of A-MAC founder Andrew McLemore Sr., respectively.
As Program Manager for the City of Detroit Parks Program, A-MAC was responsible for assessing selected city parks and developing individual scopes of work through design charrettes aimed at meeting the recreational needs of local communities. Acting as the central coordinating entity, A-MAC facilitated collaboration between the Detroit Parks and Recreation Department, Detroit Public Schools, contractors, equipment suppliers, philanthropic organizations, and the Pistons Palace Foundation.
A-MAC’s responsibilities included the creation and implementation of project budgets, administrative and construction procedures, value engineering, development of project and master schedules, oversight of land control issues, and on-site construction supervision.
-MAC was the largest construction vendor for Detroit Public Schools and ranked among its top five overall vendors by dollar volume for five consecutive years. Our team successfully delivered a wide range of major projects, including a district-wide window replacement program, interior renovations for Empowered Schools, construction of high school health clinics, and the HVAC system replacement in the Schools Center Building.
With a deep understanding of the strict standards and unique challenges of working in active school environments, particularly around children, A-MAC has developed a strong niche in the education construction sector. In addition to Detroit Public Schools, we have completed projects for Birmingham Schools, Harper Woods Schools, Oak Park Schools, and Southfield Public Schools, as well as for higher education institutions such as Wayne State University and Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD).
Comprised of 200 units in 4 complexes, the Greenfield Apartments, represent just a portion of the thousands of Apartments renovated for both private owners and public housing commissions and authorities through the years.
The most aggressive project to day has been Detroit Housing Commission's 30/30 contract. Designed to alleviate severe homelessness, contractors were asked to "turn" 30 units in 30 days in several public housing complexes. A-MAC was one of only two vendors to rise to this challenge. Working in 3 shifts, A-MAC crews successfully completed 3 of these contracts.
A-MAC was contracted by the City of Detroit to construct a state-of-the-art training facility for the Detroit Police Department. The facility includes a large auditorium with a stage, classrooms, specialized weapons and tactical training rooms, administrative offices, a commercial kitchen, locker rooms, a garage, and a vehicle maintenance area. The facility was designed to support the full spectrum of police training and operational needs as well as an emergency command post.
One of 3 "youth detention" facilities renovated by A-MAC for the State of Michigan, the original John R structure was an extended care / senior living facility. Significant renovations, security and structural upgrades were undertaken to meet the State of Michigan’s stringent requirements for youth detention and corrections. These included the addition of a gym, recreation area, classrooms, and secure inmate transport area. Additionally, a complete renovation of the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems was required to me the demanding corrections industry requirements.
