A-MAC's origins began in 1969 with the formation of A-MAC Sales & Builders. After serving his country as a lieutenant in the U.S.Army’s Artillery Command, Andrew G. McLemore Sr. was in the midst of a successful career in Aerospace with Bendix on projects such as the Redstone missile, an alternative lunar transport concept for what would one day be known as the Moon Buggy, and the Harrier “jump jet”. In 1967 he began the process of acquiring a residential storm door and window replacement company in Detroit. His intent was to retool the factory and manufacturing process and to fabricate aluminum parts for the aerospace and defense industries instead of storm doors. Those plans would take a different direction after the riots of 1968. Seeing the devastation that had rocked the nation and particularly Detroit, McLemore again felt compelled to serve his country, but this time by bringing his management expertise and the skillsets he was developing in construction to bare on rebuilding the City and serving his community.
In the early years as a residential builder the A-MAC focus was the home remodeling market. Operating in parts of Detroit that were abandoned by other construction contractors, A-MAC built a reputation of trustworthy service at fair prices while hiring from within the community. By 1980 A-MAC Sales & Builders was serving commercial, institutional, and municipal customers on million-dollar project. With projects from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, the City of Detroit, and Wayne County, as well as Chrysler Corporation, National Bank of Detroit, and Blue Cross Blue Shield to name a few.
In the 90s, A-MAC would be an intricate part of the construction landscape of Detroit, becoming Detroit Public Schools largest construction vendor by volume for 5 years and renovating schools across the city’s landscape, while simultaneously renovating thousands of housing units for Detroit Public Housing. A-MAC would also begin to venture into real-estate development with the Bishop Air Freight facility in Flint Michigan, and the Burton Correctional facility in Detroit, and several multi-family housing developments, as well as becoming the Michigan State Housing Development Authority's (MSHDA) first minority owned Sponsor, Developer, Owner, and Builder combination.
In 2000 the A-MAC Sales & Builders evolved into the general contracting company A-MAC Construction Services and formally separating the real estate group into a property management and development entity, and creating a seperate construction management and consulting entity. Since that time A-MAC Construction Services has continued to maintain a solid reputation in the construction market as a General Contractor in South Eastern Michigan.
